Colgate Prepared for First Game vs. Ball State

We touched down in Muncie, Indiana just after noon today. From the airport we bussed to Scheumann Stadium for a flawless Friday practice. We are currently relaxing in the hotel awaiting meetings and dinner this evening — the calm before the storm.

We endured a challenging 4 weeks of summer practices without losing anybody to injury. Coach Hunt’s approach to holding us back has worked; we are fresh and eager to hit some red jerseys tomorrow afternoon. We know that we can’t hold anything back if we are going to beat this impressive Ball State team.

The Cardinals, who finished 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the MAC last season and played in the Godaddy.com Bowl, expect to start their season with an easy victory. They are foolish to sleep on us because they haven’t seen THIS Raiders’ squad on film — nobody has. We have a new coach, a new quarterback and a new beginning to a promising season.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Melville will get the nod tomorrow. He will be joined in the backfield by junior running back Meach Russell. Freshman wide receiver Alex Greenawalt will make his first collegiate start in front of a sure-to-be rowdy crowd.

Senior captain and safety Mike Armiento leads the defense into battle tomorrow with fellow seniors: captain and outside linebacker Kris Kent, inside linebacker Vinny Russo and defensive lineman Anto Almasian. Despite major changes to our coaching staff we will undoubtedly take the field with the same Colgate Football attitude that has always been the heartbeat of this powerful program. No team in the country wants to play four quarters of Colgate Football and Ball State will be no exception.

I am excited to watch your Raiders put their tireless work into action. Every player who puts that ‘gate on his head tomorrow expects to fly back to Hamilton with a W. I like having the odds stacked against us — it makes for a bigger headline on Sunday.

Tune into the game on ESPN3 tomorrow at 2:05pm. Feel free to contact me with any questions. GATA!

Go ‘gate,
Jimmy
